Your new assignment is "Snow"

The definition of snow is type of precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. The process of this precipitation is called snowfall.

In 1885 Wilson Alwyn ("Snowflake") Bentley, of Jericho, Vermont, began taking photographs of snowflakes through a microscope. Thousands of Bentley's photomicrographs were eventually collected in his book Snow Crystals (1931). The fact that not one of the snowflakes photographed by Bentley was identical to another is probably the basis for the idea that no two snowflakes are ever exactly the same--an idea that is in fact unverifiable.

When I was in college, one of my roommates had a dress that she wore on the first snowfall of each year. Dressing up to celebrate the first snow, was a new idea to me, and this photo reminds me of her delight and exuberance. Snow makes the world magical, even the most ordinary, even unsightly places are transformed.

The beauty of these so-called weeds, encased in ice and hoarfrost, is there whether we look or not.

The cunning of even the smallest of birds to prevail on spilled grain meant for livestock, still amazes and reminds me that great determination is around me in the natural world--to live.

New Year's Resolutions

Find time to knit the socks, sweater, and shawl....or at least continue to enjoy the beauty of the color and texture of the wool as it sits on my bedroom floor.

Keep the scales in the cubby. Eat healthy food, moderately. Exercise in a sane manner. Love myself. Enough said.

This past summer I made a committment to do some kind of creative artwork for at least two hours per day. Many days I achieved that goal, and on several, I actually worked more than two hours. When school begins, I become a designer of creative activity for others, finding it easier to attend to other responsibilites when I have down time. Doing creative work is actually much more relaxing and exciting than many other choices. My resolution is to work on my own personal art and photography for some time each week. A Good Goal

Nostalgia: Summer Afternoon

This is one moment that I remember down to the smell of sleepy, newly diapered babies and the comfort of having my own home--not living with relatives, or sharing space in apartments. Part of me wants this back, right now. Another says, "Good riddance!" Both you and I are on to more exciting things: freedom to have time with adults-only, exploring personal creativity, and grown-up conversations about college, love, politics, religion, love, again. And again....
